Dholera sits within easy reach of some of Gujarat's best day-trip destinations. Lothal, a 5,000-year-old Harappan port with a dockyard, is about 36 km away and is gaining a large National Maritime Heritage Complex. Nalsarovar, Gujarat's largest wetland bird sanctuary, is about 77 to 80 km away, roughly an hour and a half, and is superb for migratory birds in winter. Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, famous for blackbuck, wolves and harrier roosts, is about 110 km away. Salangpur Dham, a major Hanuman pilgrimage site, is about 85 km away, and Ahmedabad is about 100 km, now roughly 40 minutes to an hour via the expressway. The best time to visit is October to March.
Dholera is often talked about only as an investment, but it also sits at the centre of a genuinely good weekend circuit: a Harappan port, one of India's finest bird wetlands, a grassland national park, a major pilgrimage temple and a UNESCO World Heritage city, all within a few hours. This entry maps that circuit with real, approximate distances so you can plan a day trip or a weekend around Dholera. Distances are approximate and drawn from verified references; treat them as guidance and confirm your exact route before travelling.

The weekend circuit around Dholera
The natural circuit runs from heritage to wildlife to pilgrimage. Start with Lothal and its upcoming maritime heritage complex, add Nalsarovar for birds in winter, push on to Velavadar for blackbuck, and fold in Salangpur Dham and Ahmedabad depending on your time. Each is a real destination with an approximate distance from Dholera, and the whole region is best explored between October and March, when the weather is cool and the migratory birds are in. See the visit guide.
Lothal: a 5,000-year-old port, about 36 km
Lothal, roughly 36 km from Dholera, is one of the most important Indus Valley sites, a 5,000-year-old Harappan port with a dockyard, a bead factory and a fort, excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is also becoming a major destination in its own right: the huge National Maritime Heritage Complex, a reported Rs 4,500 crore project, is being built here, turning Lothal into a heritage anchor on Dholera's doorstep. It is the natural first stop on any circuit. See Lothal near Dholera.
Nalsarovar: Gujarat's great bird wetland, about 77 to 80 km
Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, about 77 to 80 km from Dholera and roughly an hour and a half away, is Gujarat's largest wetland bird sanctuary and one of the best places in the state for migratory birds. In winter its shallow waters fill with flamingos, pelicans, ducks and waders, and a boat ride at dawn is the classic experience. Because it is a winter-migration destination, it rewards an October-to-March visit most of all, which fits the wider best-time window for the whole circuit.
Velavadar: blackbuck country, about 110 km
Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, about 110 km from Dholera, is a grassland park famous for its blackbuck, and also known for wolves and for one of the region's notable harrier roosts. It is the wildlife highlight of the circuit and a striking contrast to the wetlands of Nalsarovar: open golden grassland rather than shallow water. It is the furthest of the main stops, so it usually anchors a full-day or overnight leg rather than a quick detour.
Salangpur, Ahmedabad and the distances at a glance
Salangpur Dham, about 85 km away, is the revered Shri Kashtbhanjan Dev Hanumanji temple in Botad, a major pilgrimage site that draws large crowds. Ahmedabad, about 100 km southwest and now roughly 40 minutes to an hour via the expressway, is a UNESCO World Heritage City with the Sabarmati Ashram, the Adalaj Stepwell and famous textile markets. The table below collects the approximate distances.

Local spots and the best time to visit
Closer to home, emerging leisure and greenery spots around the Activation Area include Maritime Park at Bhimtalav, a Silk Route Park and river front road at Bavaliary, an S Curve Point, and lakes such as Pipli, Fedara and Pirasar, along with local temples. These are early, developing spots rather than major attractions, but they are pleasant for a short outing. Across the whole region the best time to visit is October to March, the cooler winter months, which is also peak season for Nalsarovar's migratory birds.
How to build the weekend
A simple plan is heritage on day one and wildlife on day two: Lothal and its maritime complex plus a run into Ahmedabad, then Nalsarovar at dawn and Velavadar's grasslands, with Salangpur Dham added if the route suits. With the expressway open and the airport under construction, reaching the region is easier than it once was. See how to reach Dholera and the connectivity overview.
